What is Mild Steel?

Mild steel is a type of carbon steel that only consists of a low amount of carbon. The amount of carbon that is typically found in mild steel is 0.05% to 0.25% by weight, whereas higher carbon steels usually have a carbon content of 0.30% to 2.0%.

Less carbon means that mild steel is typically more machinable, weldable, and more ductile. However, it cannot be used for purposes that require hardening and strengthening – heating does not harden this kind of steel.

The Uses of Mild Steel Plate

Mild steel is used in a variety of applications, including:

  • Signs
  • As structural steel
  • Cars

  • Fencing

How Plan Mild Steel Is Made

Mild steel is a combination of iron ore and coal that are melted together in a blast furnace. This mixture is then moved to another furnace where all impurities are burnt off. The steel is then allowed to solidify in a large rectangular sheet shape and is then brought down by hot rolling or cold rolling.
